Holiday Gift Guide #8: The Well-Dressed Geek

Well dressed, well groomed, and well organized are things that are rarely associated with geeks. I admit I’m more often wearing an old (usually free) t-shirt and shorts. Whether I’m writing code, or writing articles, my comfort is my top priority, but there are times when we need to make an impression and that AOL shirt from the last COMDEX (circa 2003) won’t do. Below we bring together a few of the things we’ve reviewed over the year that help with that first impression.

Hacking the Holidays

One of my favorite things about the maker revolution is the availability of tools that a decade ago were out of reach of the average hobbyist. Sure, magazines like Nuts & Volts catered to the die-hard hobbyists, but before the internet, and before e-commerce it was difficult for the average guy to find the parts for their projects. It wasn’t just availability either, the price of these things was high. Development boards for microcontrollers cost upwards of $100 and more, and small parts often had a minimum order of 100 units.

Marian Call: Yippee Ki Yay

Marian Call, my favorite geek songstress, has released a new holiday EP titled Yippee Ki Yay. Like most of Marian’s catalog, this release is an eclectic mix of tracks, eight in all, that emphasize her voice and witty writing style. The album opens with Marian’s acapella rendition of Ave Maria which I’ve had the privilege of hearing live. What follows is a delightful path through the beauty and comedy of Marian’s work.

Holiday Gift Guide #3: Board and Tabletop Games

It matters little if the games are made of cards, paper, cardboard, or just imagination. What matters are times spent together as a group and memories formed of those times. We seem to have a difficult time getting together to play games, but when we do we always have fun. Here are a few of the games we’ve all enjoyed playing. Some take tens of minutes, and some take many hours. Whatever your time schedule, there’s sure to be a game in here that you can enjoy with your family and friends.

Holiday Gift Guide #4: Video Games and Apps

Games made of pixels have been a favorite of mine since the Atari 2600 hit the streets. Today’s games are barely recognizable by those standards, with more realistic graphics, multi-player modes, and advanced stories. In this guide we take a look at some of our favorite games. Many of these are rated Teen, or Mature, so be sure to check the ratings before buying them for your younger kids.

Holiday Gift Guide #1: Toys

So, it’s once again that time of year. The time where we at GeekDad scour our reviews and products for the best gifts any geek would love. I know that Halloween has just barely passed, but with only six weeks left to Christmas, and barely four left to Hanukkah, it’s probably time to start some shopping.

This week we turn our eyes toward toys. Read on to see what the favorite picks from Jenny Williams, Z, Corrina Lawson, Jonathan Liu, Dave Banks, Brad Moon, Michael Harrison, and me.

ROCCAT Lua Gaming Mouse

Like most people who spend too much time on a keyboard, I have issues with repetitive stress, especially when mousing. To solve (well, postpone) this issue I have taken to using two mice. I switch frequently from right to left hand as pain and typing patterns dictate. On the right is my trusty MX Anywhere and on the left is the ROCCAT Lua Tri-Button Gaming Mouse. The latter is corded so it also gets more attention when the office is filled with robots and the wireless starts stuttering across the screen.
