Executioner's Heart Cover

Rejoice, Steampunk Fans — Newbury & Hobbes Are Back!

For over four years, I’ve eagerly anticipated each adventure that Sir Maurice Newbury and Miss Veronica Hobbes have undertaken on behalf of Queen and Country. The bond between the two investigators has grown, the dangers have increased, and secret after secret have either been revealed or further buried as a deeper storyline has slowly threaded itself through the subsequent novels, The Osiris Ritual and The Immorality Engine. Now, a fourth novel, The Executioner’s Heart, is beginning to answer questions (and, of course, create new ones) while at the same time ratcheting up the tension between the main characters and pretty much all of the minor ones.

A Little Alchemy With Your Hard Sci-Fi? The Daedalus Incident

I’m always on the lookout for a new science fiction book that will throws me a curve. Don’t get me wrong… I do love my steampunk and Sherlock Holmes and space opera, but sometimes you just want a good surprise. Does that describe you? If so, I’ve just finished The Daedalus Incident that, on a five star scale, gets six. (I may bump that up to a seven given that I’ve just learned there’s a sequel in the works.)

Foyle's War Goes Cold War in New Season

Like many of my fellow TV geeks, I enjoy the TV products that are developed across the pond, in England. Ever since we started watching Downton Abbey, like the enlightened viewers that we are, the offerings from Masterpiece Theater on PBS have particularly caught our eye. We have been watching Foyle’s War for the past couple of years as it runs on PBS Masterpiece Mystery and love it. The previous seasons have been available on Netflix, so we have now seen them all.

Wordstock Weekend Recap

Well, the Wordstock Book Festival is now over, and I had a fun (and exhausting) time. I was often bouncing back and forth between two or three panels because there were simply so many authors and cartoonists and books that I was curious about. Here’s a whirlwind recap of some of my favorite things from the weekend.

The Simpsons: Tapped Out Halloween Update is Out

Mobile, casual game-playing, freemium-loving zombies already know that EA’s The Simpsons: Tapped Out is one of the most addictive games out there. I may not be heavily into the genre, but I do love The Simpsons and this game has been on my iPad since it first came out. Besides getting rid of most of the bugs and technical issues that plagued the game last year (— cough— busy servers, lengthy load times and occasional terrifying moments where your Springfield was lost and it appeared you had to start from scratch — cough —), EA has also removed the platform divide and offers The Simpsons: Tapped Out for Android users now too. Just like last year, a new release brings Halloween spirit to the virtual Springfield, including ghosts, gremlins, GOO, trick or treating and content tied in to the TV show’s “Treehouse of Horror XXIV” episode.

Three New Phineas and Ferb Episodes a Highlight of Disney Channel's "Monstober" – Exclusive Clip & Images!

The days when the only kids’ show you could depend upon for Halloween fun was another rerun of It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown are long gone. Over the past several decades, Halloween has grown into an institution of its own, and these days people demand more TV programming — for adults and for kids alike — around the holiday. This year, Disney Channel is going all-out, putting on an entire month of spooky kids’ shows, and three new episodes of GeekDad favorite Phineas and Ferb are among the highlights.

Sweet Mother of Preston Tucker! More Middleman?!

When The Middleman was abruptly canceled by ABC Family after 12 episodes in 2008, fans were left without closure. Now, Middleman creator Javier Grillo-Marxuach has launched a fundraiser campaign on Indiegogo with three goals in mind: to reissue all of the Middleman comics in new large-format editions and set them up on a print-on-demand service to keep them available; to produce a new graphic novel in which the TV and comic book continuities merge; and to stage a cast reunion and reading of the script of the new comic (titled The Pan-Universal Parental Reconciliation) for a live audience in May 2014.

Mel Brooks: Make a Noise and The Producers Blu-Ray Collector's Edition

Mel Brooks scarred me for life. No, I’m not taking about some psychic or emotional damage caused by being exposed to his works at too young an age. I mean he has in fact literally caused physical scars on my body. Many years ago, I found myself hospitalized with a ruptured spleen; I ended up with about a six inch incision right up the middle of my abdomen. When the anesthesia wore off, I found myself watching whatever happened to be on TV, and what was on was The Producers. I pulled a pillow against my tortured stomach and watched it. I laughed so hard that I tore three stitches. I have no regrets.

Magic, Monsters and Predacons: A Halloween DVD Viewing Guide

Like any good nerd, what is a single night of revelry for regular folks — Halloween — is a month-long event for me. In addition to a slow roll-out of decorations and the laborious task of cobbling together the perfect costumes for me and my brood, the seasonal merrymaking also includes weekly viewing of especially spooky programming. Of course, now that my kids are old enough to want to participate I’ve had to dial back the gore.

Is a Hearse the Geekiest Vehicle?

I don’t normally find myself thinking about these things, but while closing out the beach at Port Stanley last weekend (here in Ontario the beach season is short but sweet — even the potted palm trees have been carted off to a greenhouse already), we drove past this hearse done up as the Ghostbusters’ Ecto-1 wheels. It’s a bit newer than the ’59 Caddie used in the Ghostbusters movies and not exactly true to the original in terms of badging and accessories, but my kids immediately knew what it’s supposed to be — props to the Shriners (the fez on the ghost decal gives that one away).
