The Wizard of Oz in IMAX 3D

On August 15, 1939, The Wizard of Oz held its red carpet premiere at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. On September 20 of this year, in celebration of the film’s upcoming 75th anniversary, a completely remastered 3D IMAX version of the film premiered at what is now the TCL Chinese Theatre to open the largest IMAX auditorium in the world. The Wizard of Oz is now playing in over 300 IMAX theaters in the US and 11 in Canada.

Schmovie: The Hilarious Game of Outlandish Films

Schmovie is the independent game from Galactic Sneeze that I’ve been waiting for since February. I first met Bryan and Sarah, the creators, back then at the NY Toy Fair. They had a demo of the game in their booth and were playing it with anyone and everyone. It was a great hit and managed to captivate me for half an hour — an eternity compared to the time I usually spend in a booth when trying to see a few thousand exhibitors in just three days.

The Hardest Level of Candy Crush

The geek in me can’t just play Candy Crush. Instead of merely wasting my evening, lining up pieces of brightly colored candy on the iPad, I also spend an inordinate amount of time thinking through the construction of the different levels. What makes a level frustrating vs. challenging? Which is more dreaded: multiplying chocolate pieces or multi-layered jellies? I threw these questions out there to the vast Internet, trying to figure out what was the hardest level of Candy Crush.

GeekDad Review: Kobo Aura

I’ve written previously about Kobo’s Aura HD, the 6.8-inch, 265 dpi, EPUB-compatible e-reader that still leads the pack so far as I’m concerned. Kobo has now released the Aura, a 6-inch e-reader that doesn’t have quite the same razor sharp display as the Aura HD, but it’s much more compact and shaves some dollars off the price tag as well. By being smaller than comparable e-readers, finding a variety of different cases to choose from may be an issue again. But you can’t have everything…

Geeks on a Mission

Get Inspired — Geeks on a Mission

Geeks on a Mission contains five essays from graduate students who participated in the Technology Consulting in the Global Community (TCinGC), a program that matches up Carnegie Mellon graduates with organizations in other countries to solve problems. What kinds of problems? Well, that depends on the country… and the client in that country. These are volunteers, and they are sent out (after some additional training) as consultants to work with the clients to understand the problem at hand and then offer up a solution that can be maintained AFTER the consultants have returned home.

Pirates: Myths vs. Facts

Hollywood and pirate novels would have you believe that pirates were swashbucklers living a life of pleasure on the seas, fighting only when they had to. They make it easy to see past the fact that they were stealing gold and other valuables by making the people they were stealing it from seem worse than them. Well, I enjoy Talk Like a Pirate Day as much as most other geeks, but I think it’s important to add a dose of reality. So I’m here to dispel some of the more popular myths about pirates, and to confirm a few as well.

Request Rejected: No, You're Not Getting That Video Game

There isn’t enough time to research games thoroughly before download. I work a full time job, and I can’t keep up with the game request research. We have fairly strict rules about violence in games since I know my kids will end up in our bedroom with their nightmares. Of course every child is different, and what rolls off one child’s vinegary brain like a blob of oil will emulsify in another child’s imagination. So we can’t always go with popularity or another parent’s vetting of a game since every child is different. There are plenty of times when I have to say no not because there is anything wrong with the game, but because I don’t have the time to explore the reviews and look at screenshots. By the time I can get around to looking at the game, that game is already on its way out with the elementary school set. If you want to keep up with the video game talk, you need to pretty much download and start playing instantly.

Royal Canadian Mint Releases Superman 75th Anniversary Coin Sets

The Royal Canadian Mint has been knocking out the collectible goodies. The Mint has released glow-in-the-dark dinosaur coins, Bald Eagles (stepping on someone else’s turf there), hologram coins, full color depictions of the Northern Lights and even a snowflake embedded with a crystal. In perhaps its greatest pop culture effort to date, the Mint recently released a set of seven Superman coins, in celebration of the Man of Steel’s 75th Anniversary.

Two Fun Books From Quirk — 100 Ghosts and Substitute Creature

I’m a big fan of Quirk Books — they continue to put out fun books that live up to the publisher’s name. Point your browser over to quirkbooks.com and spend a few minutes looking over their library and I’ll bet dollars to donuts you’ll find at least one book that you’ll put on your Wish List. I highly recommend The Last Policeman and its sequel, and I recently enjoyed William Shakespeare’s Star Wars . I’ve got a couple of new Quirk books to share with you here — one is a new book in a great Middle Grade reader series and the other is fun little book that’s a bit hard to categorize.

Exclusive Clip! – Tonight's New Phineas and Ferb Features the Voices of Gordon Ramsay and Goldie Hawn

Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay has appeared on many TV shows, as either the star or a guest, over the past 15 years or so. But one thing he hasn’t done is been a voice actor on a cartoon show. Until now, that is. Yes, on tonight’s new episode of GeekDad favorite Phineas and Ferb, airing from 9:30 – 9:45pm ET/PT on Disney Channel, Ramsay will make his voice acting debut.
