Continue ReadingI was grocing recently, and saw a few things that made me feel welcome. Basmati rice, chai, ghee, and Indian frozen meals are readily available, so I am not forced to trek out to the nearest Indian market if I want to make “my” food. But assimilation is more than just stocking your local grocery store, as I can recognize and appreciate.

Continue ReadingExposure to other cultures, languages, geography, and ways of life is vital for our kids to learn that they aren’t alone in this world. They inhabit our planet along with billions of others, most of whom don’t share a common language, diet, or sense of fashion. I love to know how things work and how they are laid out. I adore any well-done visual representation. I often explain my feelings as graphs. So when I saw these two books, they caught my attention right away.

Continue ReadingWhen you are planning a wedding, tradition and etiquette will tell you there are many things you must do. You must select a wedding party. Traditionally, there are also rules about whom you should choose. Traditionally, the parents of the individuals getting married must assume certain responsibilities. The guests are also seen to have specific roles within the whole affair. But, what if both parties have already been once married and divorced? What if one of those individuals is a trans man? What if the people getting married have different cultural backgrounds? What if a geeky element is being added? These questions are only a small fraction of things Andrew and I had to sort out as we began to plan our geeky-queer wedding.
Continue ReadingThe most difficult decision Andrew and I faced when planning our wedding was answering the question, “What are we going to wear?”
