D&D Adventurers League: Session 11-15 Report Summary

My original plan had been to summarize my first 10 sessions of the Adventurers League Encounters event for GeekDad.com and share with readers my thoughts and experiences as I returned to the most important game of my youth. I planned on continuing to play each Wednesday night at Titan Games & Comics in Atlanta, GA but would discontinue my session reports. Apparently that was a mistake. For the past few weeks, I’ve continued to receive email requests to “keep going.”

A Tale of Two Dungeon Master Guides – 1979 AD&D and 2014 D&D

The circle is complete. Wizards of the Coast has released its 5th edition Dungeon Master’s Guide, and with that book the trio of books that has formed the basis of Dungeons & Dragons for decades is united again in a new edition. Earlier this year, WotC released the 5th edition Player’s Handbook and followed it up with the 5e Monster Manual. Based on reviews and fan reaction and my own informal discussions with numerous players during my own Adventurer’s League gathering every Wednesday evening, the opinion seems to be that the 5th edition is a welcome return to traditional dungeon crawls and role playing to satisfy veteran players while bringing in enough new content and rule updates to freshen up the game and make it welcoming to new players. These reactions, however, have been based on the Player’s Handbook, Monster Manual, and the handful of ready-made adventurers that have been offered up to dungeon masters and players through the Expeditions and Encounters events. The 5e Dungeon Master’s Guide has been the most obvious missing element, but no longer. It’s here…

Holiday Gift Guide #3: Board and Tabletop Games

It matters little if the games are made of cards, paper, cardboard, or just imagination. What matters are times spent together as a group and memories formed of those times. We seem to have a difficult time getting together to play games, but when we do we always have fun. Here are a few of the games we’ve all enjoyed playing. Some take tens of minutes, and some take many hours. Whatever your time schedule, there’s sure to be a game in here that you can enjoy with your family and friends.

Grab Your Car Keys and Some Ammo — Outrider Comes to Kickstarter

If you’re itching to really know how you might stack up against your fellow drivers if car combat were a reality, a new Kickstarter has just gone live that will allow you and up to seven other players take to the open highways and duke it out with small, medium, and artillery-sized weaponry. It’s called Outrider, and here’s some basic info on how it’s played.

Kickstarter Tabletop Roundup: Building Up, Tearing Down

Well, I’ve done it again—I’ve found a whole bunch of Kickstarter board games that look like fun, and not left myself enough time to review them all before the campaigns are up. In some instances I’ve gotten a demo to try out, and in others I’ve just been following along with the campaign. Here’s a list of a few worth looking into, and I may follow up with full reviews as time allows.

What’s He Building in There?—A Game of Evil Geniuses

It’s the late 1800s. You’ve got your Evil Doctorate and you’re ready to start working on your Doomsday Machine. Obviously, London is the place to be—plenty of henchmen to be hired, resources to acquire, not to mention a great place to move up in society. There are other evil doctors there, of course, but they don’t know the brilliant ideas you have up your sleeve. You can hear them asking: “What’s He Building in There?”

Marrying Mr. Darcy and Lords & Ladies

2 Games for Polite Society

There are some themes that are pretty common in board games: fighting (zombies or monsters or just other people), magic, farming, animals. I haven’t played many games that focus on, say, attracting a suitable husband in the early 1800s or the intricacies of societal norms in the early 20th century. But—lo and behold—here are two games about polite (or sometimes not-so-polite) society: Marrying Mr. Darcy and Lords & Ladies.

Pandemic: Contagion—Mutate, Incubate, Infect

Just last month, Z-Man Games released the latest title in the Pandemic line, Pandemic: Contagion. This time, however, you’re not trying to eradicate infectious diseases. You are the diseases, working to wipe out as much of the world’s population as possible. With Ebola and Enterovirus constantly in the news, you’d think we’re on the verge of being wiped out by infectious diseases. As it turns out, that’s not as easy as the media makes it out to be—at least in this game.

Kickstarter Tabletop Alert: Dragonflame

Dragons, as you are probably well aware, love their treasure. What you may not have known is that they’re incredibly picky about what goes into their treasure hoard. And, of course, there’s always the problem of pesky knights—full of sharp, pointy bits that make the nest uncomfortable. In Dragonflame, you take on the role of dragons, collecting the right treasures and burning down a few villages for good measure.
