Sights and Sounds of Yesteryear, Winter-style

The winter season is full of traditions, many of which go back hundreds of years or more and are often from other countries. Trees, poems, decorations, songs, lights, music, and food all contribute to the festivity of the season. Here are a few things from yesteryear that will help get us in the mood. Read More

Black Friday Deals

Black Friday Deals

Hear ye, hear ye, the holiday season is upon us and shoppers everywhere are limbering up and staking out the best deals of the century. But are they really the best deals? Watch the fine print carefully for words that limit the quantity or duration of the deals. That amazingly cheap loss-leader TV might be limited to 5 or 10 per store, leaving your unsatisfied hunger for a new TV to chomp at a normally priced TV. Beware also of the trampling hordes and angry shoppers. Every year Black Friday inches closer and closer to in appearance to the running of the bulls.

2015 Holiday Gift Guide: #3 Tabletop Games

Most, if not all, of us here at GeekDad love to play games of all sorts. Digital or physical matters little to most of us so we’re splitting the games gift guide up into two parts. Today we’re featuring the physical games, ones made of cardboard, paper, and plastic. Tomorrow will showcase our favorite video games of the year. Read on for a list of our favorite games of the year. Read More

Holiday Gift Guide #8: Stocking Stuffer and Last Minute

With only a few sleeps left before presents start magically appearing under our Christmas trees, the time is short to finish the gift buying. Holiday Gift Guide #8: The Well-Dressed Geek

Holiday Gift Guide #8: The Well-Dressed Geek

Well dressed, well groomed, and well organized are things that are rarely associated with geeks. I admit I’m more often wearing an old (usually free) t-shirt and shorts. Whether I’m writing code, or writing articles, my comfort is my top priority, but there are times when we need to make an impression and that AOL shirt from the last COMDEX (circa 2003) won’t do. Below we bring together a few of the things we’ve reviewed over the year that help with that first impression.

Marian Call: Yippee Ki Yay

Marian Call: Yippee Ki Yay

Marian Call, my favorite geek songstress, has released a new holiday EP titled Yippee Ki Yay. Like most of Marian’s catalog, this release is an eclectic mix of tracks, eight in all, that emphasize her voice and witty writing style. The album opens with Marian’s acapella rendition of Ave Maria which I’ve had the privilege of hearing live. What follows is a delightful path through the beauty and comedy of Marian’s work. Computers, Lights and Music Put to Evil Use: Halloween Lights Show Set to The Fox (What Does the Fox Say)

Computers, Lights and Music Put to Evil Use: Halloween Lights Show Set to The Fox (What Does the Fox Say)

First of all, I’m sorry. I have a pair of 11 year-old boys in the house and that means I’ve heard “The Fox (What Does The Fox Say?)” by Ylvis roughly 8 million times. It’s on when their room is being cleaned, while they’re chillaxing, when they’re tormenting their older sister, even as a soundtrack when playing Call of Duty (something very incongruous about that one). I know how painful it can be, so I apologize in advance for inflicting the song on the GeekDad readership. Still, Halloween is approaching and this home has put on a pretty impressive light show. That it’s set to “The Fox (What Does the Fox Say)” is probably a big reason why it has over 1.3 million views (and counting). Once again, I’m sorry. Happy Halloween. Read More
