I remember meeting Lark Pien at the artist’s alley the first time I went to Comic-Con, back in 2005. I was really impressed with her little paintings and illustrations, but didn’t actually check out her Long Tail Kitty mini-comics at the time. I was pleased to see Pien back in the Artist’s Alley this year, and bought a copy of the Long Tail Kitty hardcover book for my daughters. Long Tail Kitty is, well, a cat with a long tail (and no nose). The book tells five little stories about Long Tail Kitty, from getting stung by a bee to having a visit from his extra-terrestrial friends. The illustrations are terrific: the characters are so simple that your kids could learn to draw them (and, in fact there’s a tutorial on drawing LTK in the back) but there’s a lot going on in the backgrounds and page layouts. This is a good one for all ages, fun to look at and to read.

Pien also has a children’s picture book coming out later this fall, Mr. Elephanter, which looks like it could be fun.

Wired: Silly little cat having fun with his friends.

Tired: Older readers might wish for more conflict and tension, but LTK is pretty laid-back.
