Bone: Tall TalesBone: Tall TalesBone: Tall Tales

I’ve always liked the Bone series, maybe because it reminded me some of Walt Kelly’s Pogo strips that I’d seen in the newspaper as a kid, and I mentioned it as one of my 7 Comics Off the Beaten Path last year. Well, Jeff Smith is still at it—in fact, at Comic-Con he remarked that Bone will be 20 years old next year! He’s working on some plans for something cool to release (my vote: Absolute Bone) but for now, there’s this: Bone: Tall Tales. Written with Tom Sniegoski, Tall Tales features Smiley Bone taking three little Bone Scouts (and a rat creature Scout) out camping. There, they tell some tall tales about Big Johnson Bone, founder of Boneville, as well as a funny story about Fone Bone and Phoney Bone trying to avoid doing laundry.

Smith did a reading from Tall Tales at his panel, and it was a lot of fun hearing him try to do all the sound effects. (There was a lot of eating in the sections he read, so lots of smacking and munching.) Tall Tales is just out this month, and is a fun addition to the Bone collection.

Wired: You really can’t go wrong with more Bone. This collection is mostly light-hearted fare with less of the creepy.

Tired: Features more of Big Johnson Bone than the three cousins you’ve grown to love, but it’s still excellent.

Note: Scholastic provided a copy of Tall Tales for review purposes.
