Books Columns Comic Books Reviews Stack Overflow

There are several Ecology related books, even for babies, and books about friendship and love, and some noisy mermaids!

Let’s start with early readers:

Baby Loves Meteorology by Ruth Spiro (Author), Kat Uno (Illustrator)

This would be a lovely gift for any baby whose relative is working in a Meteorology station. Not only does it explain what the weather is, but it also relates it with simple images to what the baby will wear according to it.

This way, we learn about wind, the water cycle, rain, and weather predictions.

This is a clever board book that explains what meteorologists do accurately.

Parents and caregivers will enjoy reading this one to their baby, especially now that Spring is coming and maybe the snow will stop coming.

Baby Loves Meteorology is on sale since March o4, 2025.

Hermanas, llueva o truene / Sisters, Rain or Shine (Bilingual Edition) by Nelly Buchet (Author), Rachel Katstaller (Illustrator), Mariana Llanos (Translator)

This bilingual picture book captures siblings’ love for each other in Spanish and English.

A young girl is going out with her big sister, but things won’t go as planned. At first, it’s too hot for comfort, and then rain starts pouring in. When they decided to go to the library instead of the park, it closed before they arrived. And well, big sister decides then and there to just enjoy the weather, looking for puddles and hanging out with her little sisters. Not what was planned, but maybe what both sisters needed.

Now let’s talk ecology and climate change:

I’m Building a Nest by Saskia Gwinn (Author) Adam Ming (Illustrator)

Thousands of different animals, birds, and insects build nests. It is incredible what they use, be it caves, holes, hills, or hives; nests come in many shapes and forms.

Bird discovers 50 different homes animals make, how they build using the territory, and how they take advantage of detritus and debris.

One can even survive underwater!

Up next, this story talks about climate change:

How to Explain Climate Science to a Grown-Up by Brianne Farley (Author)

MY GROWN-UP DOES NOT KNOW ALL THE ANSWERS!
Sometimes they need ME to explain things to THEM.
If you’re reading this, I’m guessing YOUR grown-up needs help understanding stuff, too.
With a little help from this book,
YOU can explain CLIMATE SCIENCE to your grown-up!

My favorite part of this book is its perspective: How to Explain Climate Change to Adults tells kids that adults are a bit set in their ways, and cannot grasp certain concepts easily. You may have to proceed gently and start slowly, using conversation starters such as “Have you noticed it rains a lot more recently? Why do you think that is?

I found it both hugely entertaining and completely accurate.

When a Tree Falls- Nurse Logs and Their Incredible Forest Power Kirsten Pendreigh (Author) Elke Boschinger (Illustrated by)

Even though I am a keen ecologist, I had no idea about nurse logs and what they mean for their habitats.

This nonfiction picture book offers a new look at the forest’s life cycle.

When a tree falls, it turns out it just doesn’t rot on the ground: She is a place to grow, to rest, and to shelter.

A nurse log provides a nutrient-rich space for new seedlings, shelters small animals, hosts different plant species, and, the most important bit, can nurture a new tree in the process, renewing the cycle of life. The tree does not need to be the same one as the nurse log, it can be of a different species!

In the link below, it says there’s only a digital version, I don’t know why.

When a Tree Falls is available since March 18, 2025.

Now, let’s deal with children’s frustrations:

Wash Day Love by Tanisia Moore (Author) Raissa Figueroa (Illustrator)

Hair is a subject that can be very touchy with kids, because, frankly, washing your hair is always a source of discomfort until you get used to it.

Tasha hates it.

Wash day means stinging eyes, an aching back, and water everywhere, even in her ears!

But it is a family moment, one where all her dearest relatives are present, big sis, mom, and grandma. They are all together, telling stories and making it a ritual. A beautiful one, filled with warm memories.

Wash Day Love is available since March 04, 2025

Echo by Adam Rex (Author)

I love Adam Rex; his quirky drawings and sensibility, and penchant for humor are extraordinary.

Once upon a time,e there was a Junior. One that was always right about absolutely everything. He lived across a high, echoey mountain, and the mysterious voice from across the valley was his best friend.

Junior Junior is the greatest in the world! He used to shout.
Junior Junior is the greatest in the world! the echo shouted back.

Until one day, a new girl moved in next door.

This is the most delightfully irritating person you can imagine; all the power antics and all the shouting do not faze her, and after all, she is real and having someone to disagree with might be interesting, too.

(Echo is also real, in his way, and Junior will stomp away one day to find him).

Now here are some fun graphic novels:

Mermaids Are the Worst! by Alex Willan (Author)

Gilbert the Goblin has decided to have a vacation on a nice, secluded beach.

However, his quiet plan is shattered by some annoying and very loud mermaids.

Mermaids are the worst, with their games, their laughter, and food, and how they seem to be having a much better time than Gilbert is.

However, there is a solution! Maybe Gilbert can choose to have fun instead of complaining…

Up next, this graphic novel is the sixth in a series but stands well on its own:

Nat a Chance: A Graphic Novel (Nat Enough ) by Maria Scrivan (Author)

Nat is the clumsiest at sports. She feels that everything has the potential for embarrassment, and her only hope is to pass unnoticed. However, her best friend, Zoe, is having trouble and asks Nat to keep her company as she changes teams. She’s ditching a mean friend in the process, and all that Nat has to do is join her in the triathlon training.

Nat will regret the training and the setbacks from the first moment, but should she quit? Or her friendship is more important than being clumsy?

Nat a Chance: A Graphic Novel is available since March 04, 2025

Finally, this middle grade novel about disability:

Whale Eyes. A Memoir About Seeing and Being Seen by James Robinson (Author), Brian Rea (Illustrator)

James cannot read as easily as other kids. He is not blind, per se, but everything seems to swim out of focus. The book proposes that you see as he sees, by swimming words on the page and making you watch images and then interact with them. Thanks to Brian Rea, the illustrator, you are immersed in how James sees and experiences the world.

These disabling eye conditions will make readers chase words, stare at blank pages, flip the book this way and that, and pretend to read. What is extraordinary is how James overcomes this disability and learns how to communicate, despite his eyes being in the way.

Whale Eyes is available since March 18, 2025
Publisher: Penguin Workshop
Hardback| Pages: 304
