Finally! The First Trailer for Paul Feig’s ‘Ghostbusters’

Geek Culture Movies

This morning, we finally caught our first glimpse of the new Ghostbusters team in action. Check out the first trailer for Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters and keep reading for some shot-by-shot analysis…

Is it just me, or is it refreshing to see a reboot that actually seems like a good time? With so many serious popcorn movies hitting theaters these days – yes, Batman v. Superman, I’m looking at you – Ghostbusters seems like the antithesis. As it should. The original Ghostbusters is one of the most beloved films of all time. The mere idea of a reboot is a bold one to consider. Not many directors can pull this off. In the hands of some, playing in the Ghostbusters world could come across as heavy-handed, overly self-referential or vulgar. Luckily, it’s Paul Feig’s (Bridesmaids, Spy) hands that the franchise has fallen into.

This is just a trailer, and it’s hard to judge any film based on it’s marketing, but lets do it anyways.

The trailer begins with some titles and a look at the familiar Ghostbusters firehouse…

30 years ago four scientists saved New York

Are we to believe that the world of this new film is set 30 years later in the same world as the first Ghostbusters?

Next we see some subway graffiti. Perhaps this is New York’s way of calling for some help. You know – “Who you gonna call?”

A new team will answer the call

Catch a glimpse of the first ghost, who, like the first ghost in the 1984 film, is floating around in a library. Oh, and we also have our first sliming! Yay ectoplasm!

Let’s meet the new team…

Kristen Wiig as Erin Gilbert, a quantum-physicist. Comparatively, I’d say she is the Peter Venkman of the group.

Melissa McCarthy as Abby Yates, paranormal scientist. She’s likely the Ray Stantz of the group.

Kate McKinnon as Jillian Holtzmann, a “brilliant engineer” and likely the Egon Spengler of the team.

And finally, Leslie Jones as Patty Tolan, a NYC subway worker who is likely the Winston Zeddmore of the team.

I hate to compare this new team to the first, but it’s hard not to. Now, I don’t know if this film exists in the same world as the original, so, Ray, Peter, Egon and Winston could be part of this universe. Bill Murray, Dan Akroyd and Ernie Hudson are listed on the IMDB page for the film, so who knows?

Now a few random observations…

Looks like the headquarters for this new team isn’t the familiar firehouse, but this Chinese restaurant.

The new gear looks pretty exciting in action. I love the grit and DIY nature of it all.

Check out the new proton packs!

Here’s a behind the scenes video on the science of the packs featuring Resident Particle Physicist James Maxwell. How many movies can say they have a Particle Physicist on staff?

And man, get a load of that new bear-trap style ghost trap…

Goosebumps for the new Ecto-1 in action. Replacing the Cadillac Ambulance from the original series with a Cadillac Fleetwood Hearse was an absolute perfect choice.

Here’s a closer look at some of the ghosts from the trailer.

This giant Uncle Sam ghost is pretty awesome looking. Nice to see some strange and goofy ghosts in here, though, how can you possibly top Stay Puft?

Screen Shot 2016-03-03 at 9.16.15 AM

Oh, here’s how. You bring back Slimer!

What do you think? Is this first look everything you’d hoped for? Is it more? Will you be there when Ghostbusters hits theaters this July?

  1. I’m just not sold. I don’t like all the similarities — four team members (4th “extra” member to join is African American, one wearing glasses is the smart one of the group), the hearse too similar to ambulance, Slimer (really?). Now, if this truly takes place in the same world as the original Ghostbusters, I can see Slimer and maybe even the hearse if they’re TRYING to mimic the earlier group… but it just feels too much. Original film had only three bad guys – librarian, slimer, Gozer/Stay Puft, while this one seems to be flinging ghosts everywhere and might be relying too much on special effects instead of story and characters.

I really have a problem with the lack of creativity shown with this film. Yes, I realize it’s only 2 minutes of a much longer film, but my gut is telling me this movie may be trying to hard. I also COMPLETELY hate the physical comedy of McCarthy — her getting slapped over and over by the teammate is just idiotic just reeks of all her other films where a large woman falls, drops, gets hit, etc. Aykroyd didn’t have to resort to it, but I guess because it’s McCarthy, it’s expected now.

I’ll end here… I could go on and on about how I’m just not inspired. I really hope I’m completely wrong about the film and I will be glad to apologize to the director and cast if they pull this off, but I’m also one who didn’t feel the reboot was necessary as the original film holds up well and should have been left alone.

I’m grumpy and hungry. Going to go eat now and maybe watch original GB tonight.
