Camping gear I liked

Camping Tech Gear Roundup

I just wrapped up a few weeks of camping, including a week in Algonquin Park, the nearly 3,000 square mile Canadian gem that’s home to an estimated 2,000 black bears, plus moose, wolves, and other assorted wildlife. As usual, I had a large collection of gear with me. A few of those items stood out and will definitely be added to my regular camping rotation going forward.

Cowin Ark Solves the Bluetooth Speaker Bass Problem

If you’ve listened to a typical portable Bluetooth speaker, you probably immediately noticed one of the biggest shortcomings in the category: bass. It’s really tough to find one that provides deep, booming bass, especially if you don’t want to be spending $500 or more. The Cowin Ark takes a unique approach to tackling the problem and actually manages to deliver booming bass. Here’s how.

Tiva Turbo Bluetooth speaker

GeekDad Review: Riva Turbo X Premium Bluetooth Speaker

For the past few weeks I’ve been taking advantage of the extended summer weather, putting a Riva Turbo X Premium Bluetooth Speaker through its paces — and probably annoying my neighbors in the process. It may not be the most compact wireless speaker out there and it’s certainly not the cheapest, but it’s definitely among the best I’ve tried. Besides great sound, I’ve never tested a speaker that has the cord-free stamina of this one.

Gadget Review: Inateck Waterproof Bluetooth Speaker

The last few weeks I’ve had the pleasure of testing the MercuryBox by Inateck. This compact Bluetooth speaker is splash-proof in all directions, making it the perfect Bluetooth speaker for those situations when it would be dangerous to bring most speakers. While not perfect, this speaker took very little time to become part of my routine and has become one of my most relied-upon musical devices.

GeekDad Review: Taco Dual, Stereo Bluetooth Speaker(s)

One of the cooler tricks that some higher end wireless portable speakers are able to pull off is pairing two units for stereo sound. I’ve tried out this feature with speakers like the Vers 1Q and various Sonos products and it’s great—having a pair of wireless speakers for true stereo separation adds a lot to the listening experience compared to a single speaker. However, it’s also expensive.

Aether Cone wireless speaker

Aether Cone Gains Voice Feedback

Last December, I reviewed the Aether Cone, a unique wireless speaker that brings new meaning to the concept of “smart” thanks to its ability play songs based on voice commands and to learn your music preferences. A few months ago, it got even smarter, eliminating my biggest gripe after a free over the air update unlocked the ability to stream music using Bluetooth. Now Aether has released another update, giving the Aether Cone another new feature: voice feedback.

Nyne's Mini Bluetooth speaker

GeekDad Review: Nyne Mini Bluetooth Speaker

Bluetooth speakers have become a must-have accessory for parents of music-loving kids. They’re also great for using in the back yard, taking camping, and generally getting tunes to wherever a stereo isn’t. While there are some really excellent wireless speakers that can capably fulfill the role of compact stereo replacement (like the Aether Cone I reviewed a while back), there’s also high demand for small, inexpensive Bluetooth speakers to fill those first scenarios I mentioned. These speakers become a balancing act between affordability, decent sound, portability, battery life, and durability. The Nyne Mini Bluetooth Speaker does a pretty good job of achieving that balance.
