Justice League Intergalactic Special #1 – Jadzia Axelrod, Nicole Maines, Writers; Travis Moore, Artist; Tamra Bonvillain, Colorist
Ray – 9.5/10
Ray: Galaxy and Dreamer have been two of the biggest new hit characters to come out of DC in recent years – both trans women, both created or co-created by trans women, and both cosmic heroes with truly unique powers. Now, for the first time, they actually get to team up in an oversized Justice League one-shot by Axelrod and Maines. There’s just one problem – Dreamer really isn’t considered a hero right now. She was forced to work with Amanda Waller during Absolute Power and is now a wanted woman. But her home planet is under attack by an obscure villainess named the Witch Queen (Sinestro’s sister, actually!) and she’s got the entire planet and a team of liberatory Green Lanterns under her thrall. So Galaxy, currently on one of her first missions with the League, reaches out to try to bring Dreamer on board for a rescue mission. It doesn’t go well, to put it lightly.

This story is almost double-sized from a standard issue, feeling much more like an annual than a one-shot, and it’s phenomenal. I don’t want to spoil too many details, but the choice of team is excellent – the two young women are joined by Star Sapphire, Adam Strange, and Green Arrow, all of which have some sort of thematic connection to the story of the two leads. Then there’s the sixth member of the team, the always-delightful Argus, who steals the show and very much wants to drive Adam Strange’s spaceship. The core of the story, though, is the tentative bond between Galaxy and Dreamer and the very different trauma they’re both processing. The structure of us seeing the fallout from some of Galaxy’s plotlines before we see them unfold in her own graphic novels is always a little odd, but highly intriguing. And this is, of course, only a teaser for the upcoming Pride event that this leads into. A must-buy.
