Ray: The new storyline “Reign of the Superboys” begins here and in Action this week. DC KO has wrapped up, and things are going back to normal – for most heroes. Superman is missing, having seemingly ascended to Godhood as the new King Omega, and that’s left his entire family in flux. Kara has been trying to keep things afloat, but she’s preoccupied with a crisis in Kandor. Along with help from Conner Kent and Lena Luthor manning the portal back home, Kara heads into Kandor in search of her friend Lesla-Lar – only to find the city in ruins. Two disturbing new villains named Rust and Cut are tearing it apart, terrorizing civilians, and it’s all Kara can do to fend them off as her powers start to fail her. But each of the villains – and the civilians – are all telling her the same thing. There’s a new villain named Black Flame on the prowl, directing the attacks – and she’s working with Lesla-Lar.
Once Kara heads to the city center, it becomes clear that the problem is being complicated the fascist-leaning Science Council. They’ve sealed themselves off during the crisis, leaving the city at the mercy of the villains. Black Flame is determined to make Kandor pay as much as possible until they overthrow the Science Council – and create the conditions for curing their condition, returning to Earth, and likely claiming it for themselves. The reveal of why Lesla is working with the villain is surprising and pretty unpredictable, with it being clear that she’s terrified of the Black Flame. But while Kara does her best to try to reason with these two, it soon becomes clear that this new rogue wants nothing more than to kill her and do it publicly. The end of this issue is surprisingly brutal, unlike anything I’ve ever seen in a Supergirl comic, and it jacks up the tension to a perfect level for the cliffhanger.
