Ray – 9/10
Ray: Hal Jordan is back from space, and that means a road trip. Haunted by the strange visions he got from the Book of Oa, he’s seeking out counsel from his fellow heroes about what they mean for his role as a hero. First, he sought out Green Arrow, one of his closest friends who he can always trust on for honest feedback. And in this issue, he seeks out Batman, who is…not one of his closest friends. The two never quite got along due to Batman’s grim demeanor and Hal’s hotshot attitude (he gets results, you stupid chief!), but that tension escalated into full-on dislike after Hal’s Parallax era, when Batman was the very last member of the League to trust him again. And that’s exactly why Hal needs him – he needs someone to analyze him without caring at all about what it means for him, because that’s the only feedback he can trust. It gets off to a decent start – but then Gotham decides to interrupt, as it usually does.

Weirdness in the city is nothing new, but today the dangers are even stranger than usual. The city is under attack by what seems like hard-light projections, appearing and disappearing as quickly, and all seem to reflect the things most feared in Gotham City. Batman and Green
Lantern spend most of the issue chasing their tails, trying to stay one step ahead, until a clue is found – leading to an unexpected culprit. There are a lot of funny scenes in this issue, particularly in the way Hal is constantly trolling Bruce, but there are also some surprisingly emotional moments as Hal and Bruce dig into the trauma both experienced losing loved ones at a young age, and how they both manifest their coping mechanisms differently. Hal has a surprisingly dark backstory, and Adams has followed up on a lot of the themes that Geoff Johns worked with when building it. Next up, The Flash – as he gets closer and closer to answers.
