Ray: Tom King is known for some of the grittiest, most cerebral comics at DC, frequently taking on weighty topics like suicide and PTSD. Which is why it was all the more surprising that his Trinity backups were the silliest, most ridiculous thing he’s ever done, involving plot threads like Jon and Damian being turned into Corgis. When it came time for Lizzie to get a solo series, the corgis returned as three different versions of Trinity took over the timestream – only for King to then start ripping out our hearts once again. So far, she’s met Jason Todd (twice), Alfred, and Wonder Woman – but she saved the most emotional reunion for last. She’s come to Washington DC to meet with her father, and hopefully convince him to abandon his destiny and travel through time with her. And she’s chosen to do this at the last possible moment – arriving on the day he’s supposed to be murdered by the Sovereign.

Steve Trevor’s a character who has often been misused or poorly regarded by Wonder Woman fans, which was why it was a surprise when he factored so heavily into King’s run. But this issue humanizes him in a great way, showing how he reacts to finding out he’s a father but might never know his daughter at all. However, this issue also makes very clear that there’s much more to his story that’s just starting, as Diana’s battle with the Matriarch looms. The ending of this issue is basically designed to get tears out of any parent, new or old. That’s the fascinating thing about this run as a whole. Trinity’s existence is one of the biggest status quo changes in Diana’s history, and King has put a lot of work into the character. Is her existence likely to persist outside of his run? We’ll have to see, but I think a lot of people initially skeptical about the decision are more than a little impressed with how this played out.
