‘Marty Abrams Presents Mego’ Releases Retro Figures, The Fonz, Hawaiian Greg Brady, and Joe Namath

The original Mego Corporation figures were a staple for anyone growing up in the ’60s and ’70s. Generation X owes a lot to the eight-inch characters that fought wars in our back yards and living rooms. That is why the new Marty Abrams Presents Mego figures seemed to be especially targeted for those of us who watched our favorite characters on UHF channels back in the day. I had talked about the initial first wave of Mego figures last July. Since that time Marty Abrams Presents Mego has released three waves of these retro dandies to grace our walls and shelves. GeekDad has been fortunate enough to receive a few figures for review and I have to say that not only is The Marty Abrams Presents Mego figures up to the classic standards… they have surpassed them. The face sculpts are fabulous and great renditions of the characters they are supposed to represent. The detail has gone way up since the ’70s. They are not as detailed as many of the high-end figure manufacturers today but that is not the point. The goal is to give you that retro feel you had when you begged your parents to purchase them at your local department store. The clothes also look and feel higher quality than the originals.

First up is everyone’s favorite shark jumper, Fonzie from Happy Days. This is a great representation of a character so iconic that he has his own bronze statue in Wisconsin. The face sculpt is a great depiction of Henry Winkler’s face. The figure stands the traditional Mego eight inches and comes with Fonzie’s cloth white t-shirt and jeans with plastic boots and iconic leatherette jacket. The accessory for the Fonz is his trusty comb to keep his flowing pompadour in shape.

This figure is currently for sale at Target for a mere $12.99 which is a retro fair price for some nostalgia.

The next figure is a personal favorite. Growing up in the ’70s and ’80s, I watched re-runs of the Brady Bunch endlessly. One of my favorite episodes was the Hawaiian vacation. So much so that when I went to Hawaii, my goals were not just to go to Waikiki beach but also to meet Don Ho and find myself a tiki (non-cursed preferably). Once again the 8″ figure has a great sculpt of actor Barry Williams’ face. Greg’s Hawaiian shirt, jeans, sneakers, and of course the cursed tiki round out the figure. I hope we see a Johnny Bravo version of Greg in the future from Mego to go along with this great collector’s item. Greg Brady is also for sale at Target for $12.99.

Lastly, we have the football icon and legend Joe Namath in his New York Jets jersey from Superbowl III. When you think of the late ’60s and ’70s, there are few sports names more famous than Joe Namath. He even guest starred on the Brady Bunch with the aforementioned Barry Williams as Greg Brady. Broadway Joe also has a great face sculpt with his flowing locks and famous smile. This 8″ figure comes with cloth jersey and pants, and plastic cleats, shoulder pads, and helmet. Joe’s accessory is a football as you may have guessed. Joe comes in for a few dollars more at $14.99 at Target but is still a great value for Mego and sports collectors.
