Review: ‘Call of Cthulhu’ on PS4

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Cyanide brings the macabre world of H.P. Lovecraft to life with their new game Call of Cthulhu!

What is it?

Call of Cthulhu is a horror mystery game for all platforms that is played in the first person and is heavily influenced by the Call of Cthulhu RPG game that was originally published in the 1980s and is still very popular amongst RPG fans to this day. The Cthulhu or Lovecraftian mythos was created by Providence writer H.P. Lovecraft and was made famous in the 1930’s pulp magazine Weird Tales. The mythos revolves around the concept that ancient beings ( In this case the Cthulhu Monster) try to control the universe and are behind all things evil and macabre.

My Thoughts

As a lifelong fan of the Cthulhu mythos and H. P. Lovecraft, I was looking forward to this game with great intensity. Once the game booted up on my PS4 my expectations slowly deteriorated. I love the setting and art design but the graphics feel extremely last generation and some of the motion captures feels older than that. That being said I still feel that you could get past all of that if you just want to immerse yourself in an eerie world, especially around Halloween. Gamers will get a giant helping of atmosphere but may be starving for more options. Call of Cthulhu will feel at times like more of an interactive horror movie. Most of the gameplay revolves around talking to NPCs and making choices which may work wonders if you are a fan of thew now defunct TellTale Games. The Voice acting is great which makes all of the conversations more palpable. Puzzles in Call of Cthulhu are few and not very difficult and Boss battles are also light on action. Yes, I have said many negative things, but if you really are looking for an immersive horror story that does not require you being an all-star hardcore gamer this may actually be perfect for you. If you are a Lovecraft fan I would almost argue that Call of Cthulhu is a must for you.
