Kamala Khan Embiggens ‘Marvel Contest of Champions’

Marvel Contest of Champions

Well, the Deadpool quests in Marvel Contest of Champions are over now, but the new quests feature one of my favorite new characters: Kamala Khan. Kamala is the new Ms. Marvel, with “embiggening” powers, and she’s just a really fun kid who’s often star-struck during her interactions with other superheroes.

Marvel Contest of Champions

The new quest, “Kamala’s First Day,” has Ms. Marvel showing Kamala the ropes and introducing her to the Battlerealm. Along the way, you’ll encounter a couple new characters: Wolverine X-23 and Agent Venom. So far it doesn’t look like any of the new characters are available in any of the hero crystals, so you can fight them but can’t add them to your own collection … yet.

Kamala’s signature sass is present in the little dialogue cut-scenes, and (as always) she has a blast. Her victory move after a fight is taking a selfie.

Kamala’s fight moves has her changing size constantly, sometimes stretching out arms or legs, sometimes enlarging her fist, and sometimes growing her entire body. It’s a little disorienting to watch, but pretty fun to see it brought to life like that.

I have to admit that I hadn’t followed the Wolverine X-23 story so I had to go look it up, but here’s Laura Kinney, a female clone of Logan, with two claws on each hand with her version of the classic Wolverine costume. She’s fast and furious and causes a lot of bleed damage, so watch out for those claws when you’re fighting her. She shows up in the quest but doesn’t have a lot of dialogue here.

Agent Venom is another one that I didn’t know about, but I could tell from his name and costume that he’s another symbiote-based character. Turns out he’s post-war Flash Thompson, who takes on the symbiote as a chance to regain his legs, though he’s constantly battling the symbiote to keep it from taking over. In the game, Agent Venom pops up in ambushes and also as a final boss in one of the quests, and uses a mixture of guns and symbiote tentacles to attack.

The other new feature introduced earlier this week is Alliance Battles. They’re similar to the Alliance Quests, where you and your alliance take on a large battlerealm together, with only three champions each. However, this time, your alliance first sets up a battlerealm, picking your own defending champions to put into preset spaces. Then you get matched up against another alliance–you pick your attacking champions and run through the battlerealm they created, while they do the same in yours. Everyone gets some awards, but you have to score higher than the other alliance to get the big bonuses.

Finally, you can see Modok front and center on the most recent splash screen, but he’s not in the temporary quests. From what I’ve heard, he’s in the last chapter of the story quest, but I’m haven’t gotten that far yet (and it’ll take me a while at my current rate). So I don’t have any pictures of him yet and have no idea what his powers are like–but I bet it’ll be a challenge.

  1. I’m not a game player per se, and before Marvel C.O.C. I had no games on my phone. However this game has me locked in. The team that created it did a masterful job with everything but the crystals and what they land on. Not very “random”. Thank you for the Great article. -another geeky Dad.
