Ray: When Tom King is really on his game, there’s no one out there who does it like him. This series has been hilarious, but it manages to hit some real emotional moments as the three versions of Lizzie bop through time and deal with encounters with Jason Todd, as well as their mother and father in different timelines. However, with this issue King returns to the scene of his most controversial story – the Batman wedding that wasn’t. We all know that Bruce and Selina won’t manage to get married due to Bane’s machinations, and that this is where everything will start to go to hell – but no one else does. So right now, the presence of a strange super-powered corgi in Wayne Manor is the most problematic thing happening, and resolving it falls to the man who always has a plan, Alfred Pennyworth. And as Alfred narrates this issue, from beyond the grave, as he talks to Steve Trevor, we know something big is coming.

King’s Alfred was always such a great presence in the title – a calming presence to be sure, but also ruthlessly competent and intelligent. He knows what everyone needs – so it takes him no time to slip into paternal mode when a strange little girl calling herself Wonder Robin shows up and starts talking about a Corgi. Similar to Supergirl, this series is just packed with silly fun, including some of the funniest visuals I’ve ever seen in a DC book. Unlike that excellent series, it can just as easily slip in the biggest gut punch you’ve seen in a comic in years. Belen Ortega’s art is top-notch here, particularly when Selina shows up late in the issue, and the narration is packed with emotion – and then we get to the last few pages, which have huge implications for the whole DCU. It was recently revealed that this is only a miniseries, which is a damn shame, because it’s shaping up to be another King masterpiece in the making.
