Back in April, Alamo Drafthouse Cinema released a Godzilla popcorn bucket, celebrating the giant atomic lizard’s Shōwa-era films appearances. It seemed just a matter of time before one of Godzilla’s foes would also make an appearance in bucket form, and that indeed has happened.
Originally only available as a ticket add-on to Alamo Drafthouse Cinema screenings of the 1974 Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, the Mechagodzilla popcorn bucket is now available to purchase on Alamo Mart, Alamo Drafthouse’s online store. It costs $75, and is available while supplies last.

The Mechagodzilla popcorn bucket comes in a collectible metallic box. Each bucket is numbered as part of a limited edition run.

The popcorn bucket itself was designed by Scott Sugiuchi, and measures 7″ x 10″ x 10.5″.

The mouth of Mechagodzilla opens up, revealing missiles hidden inside.

While you reached down the mouth of the Godzilla popcorn bucket to eat your popcorn, that’s not the case with Mechagodzilla. Instead, there’s a hatch in back where you will both fill up the popcorn and eat from it.

The hatch closes fairly securely, but I still somewhat wish that there was a magnetic clasp or even a latch to secure it. However, let’s be real- most people are going to display this popcorn bucket, not eat from it. But still, it would have been a nice feature to enhance its usability.
Overall, this popcorn bucket is a great representation of the Shōwa-era Mechagodzilla, in much the same way as Alamo Drafthouse’s Godzilla popcorn bucket. It’s functional as a popcorn bucket, with easy access to the popcorn and handwashing to clean. But it’s also a great display piece, especially if you already have the Godzilla bucket. I’ll be curious to see if Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is planning any other classic Godzilla monsters. You could have a King Ghidorah popcorn bucket that feeds three at the same time, and I know I’d be first in line for a Jet Jaguar. I guess time will tell. Meanwhile, if you’re a fan of classic Godzilla, this is one you’re not going to want to sleep on.

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema provided a popcorn bucket for evaluation, but had no input into this review.
