Ray: For the last few months, we’ve been teased about everything that’s coming from the end of DC KO, as every major DC hero and villain got a unique vision of the future – a task they’ll have to accomplish, or a key future threat. Every hero and villain, that is, besides Batman and Lex Luthor. They were blank until recently, when they got a vision simultaneously – and one that indicates they’ll have to work together. Now, while Luthor is Superman’s arch-nemesis, he and Batman may actually drive each other crazier. As the issue opens, they’re pursuing the threads they were gifted in the vision, and it leads them to…a trio of arms dealers? It seems to be a standard case, and they easily handle the rogues – until the buyer arrives, in the form of a towering crooked house that rises from Slaughter Swamp. As the gunrunners disappear into the house, Batman and Luthor follow – into the den of one of the League’s deadliest enemies.
Prometheus was a creation of the great Grant Morrison, essentially an anti-Batman driven by seeing his criminal parents killed by police in front of him. He was elevated into an A-list threat, but both his own death and his worst atrocities have since been retconned. That doesn’t make him any less intimidating here, though, as his obsession with elite weaponry has led him to make a deal with a devil and give away larger and larger parts of his humanity, as his house shifts into an eldritch location. There are some great techno-horror bits in this issue, as Batman and Luthor discover the fate of the three criminals and try to work past their mutual animosity just enough to get out alive. This issue has great visuals and character work, but it feels a bit like a side story that teases a coming storyline that we pretty much already knew was coming. Still, as an expansion of the excellent Justice League title Waid writes, it’s a good oversized annual.
