Ray: The new format that splits the comic between two different narratives has opened it up to some very unique and strange storylines, with Hal Jordan on a mission in deep space and Kyle Rayner dealing with some bizarre developments in Los Angeles. Hal and Jayna of the Wonder Twins are still on the trail of answers about the Book of Oa – as well as Jayna’s missing cousin, and that’s brought them into contact with the bounty hunter Y2K, who claims to be the last son of Earth from a world where the Y2K disaster destroyed the planet. He’s a funny novelty character, and backstabs both the heroes and the criminals he tried to turn them over to so many times that it almost feels like it has to be a gag of some kind. But this story also ends with a surprise, as it looks like Hal will be leaving this book temporarily – and heading over to Adams’ other book, Emperor Aquaman, for a crossover.

I think it was the Kyle Rayner story that stood out from the pack here, though. Odyssey the Time Bandit has scored a starring role in a movie, with Kyle taking on the role of her bodyguard, but there’s just one problem – her distinctive star mark, which seems to be tied to why she was locked up in the Sciencells despite being a relatively harmless petty criminal. She needs it removed, so she’s pointed to Dr. Skin, a hotly in-demand Hollywood plastic surgeon who claims to be able to turn anyone into a new person. Literally, even aliens, who he gives skin-suits that allow them to blend into the general public and commit crimes. This issue has some great, creepy creature-feature moments that feature some unique monsters and scares, and in general has the kind of pulpy, offbeat tone that Green Lantern excels at. And Kyle’s storyline is also the funniest this title has been in a long time.
