Harley Quinn #59 – Elliott Kalan, Writer; Carlos Olivares, Artist; Marissa Louise, Colorist
Ray – 8.5/10
Ray: After over a year of buildup, it’s finally time for Harley Quinn and Althea Klang’s first date – as DC continues to play with this strange status quo where Harley and Ivy are a couple but also both have situationships in their own book. Klang, the evil corporate tyrant, has been both Harley’s arch-nemesis and her crush, and they’re trying to make a go of an actual relationship – if they can agree on who’s the villain here, as well as if they can keep their date night restaurant from being torn apart by a battle between Colonel Blimp and Chicken Fingers. It’s all about as silly as you’d expect, and it has some surprisingly tense moments as Klang is forced to decide whether she’s truly evil, or if there’s enough good in her to save the life of someone Harley cares about. Despite me not particularly being invested in the couple, this winds up being one of the more compelling issues in the title recently thanks to its tight character focus.

Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong II #7 – Brian Buccellato, Writer; Christian Duce, Artist; Luis Guerrero, Colorist
Ray – 8/10
Ray: This final issue of the two-miniseries epic that pitted the Justice League against the entirety of the Legendary Monsterverse ends with a bang, albeit one that leaves very little time for anything but monster action. There are a few interesting bits right at the start, such as a very well-written conversation between Harley and Batman as they liberate Mothra, and a great monologue by Flash as he reflects on taking over Barry’s legacy, but there are close to twenty monsters in this book, and we’re here to see them all throw down in Christian Duce’s great art. Once it’s all said and done, the book doesn’t quite end so much as just wind down, with a few brief epilogues as everything goes back to normal and Harley tries to pull off one last escape. It’s a fun read, but it’s very much in line with the Monsterverse – we’re not here for the story, but the monster throwdowns definitely deliver.
