Ray: Josh Williamson has built one of the most exciting Superman runs in a long time, creating a version of Metropolis that feels more alive than it has in a while and fleshes out the supporting cast in a way we haven’t seen since the 90s. Coming on the heels of last month’s insanely brutal Doomsday showdown, this issue gives the main characters a much-needed breather, with Superman and Superwoman taking the time to have a date night. With Supergirl keeping an eye on Metropolis, Clark and Lois try to find the perfect activity that they can both enjoy now that they both have powers, although Clark’s idea of playing darts on the moon causes a lot more property damage than she might have been expecting. Somehow, despite the two being deeply in love, none of the options feel quite right – less a sign of trouble than a sign that nothing actually needs to change despite all that has already changed.

The great escape. Via DC Comics.

While Superman and Lois get the main plotline here, there are also a series of interludes that are very intriguing. One shows how Jimmy and Siobahn spend their date nights – which is a lot more sedate than you’d expect, given that one is a former supervillain and the other is the former Turtle Boy. Another shows Lex paying a visit to Supercorp – and possibly forming more of a connection with Mercy, now that he’s free of his past self. And the third shows us what Doomsday dreams of when he’s under the influence of the Black Mercy – and it’s terrifying. Brilliant use of only a few panels to imply massive horrors. Doomsday looms large through this issue, delving into the trauma he left in his wake for both Clark and Lois. That concept becomes much more present when the new villains show up, a fascinating concept with a terrible ultimatum. Another fantastic outing from Williamson and Mora.
