Green Lantern Corps #3 – Jeremy Adams, Morgan Hampton, Writers; Fernando Pasarin, Penciller; Oclair Albert, Inker; Arif Prianto, Colorist
Ray – 9/10
Ray: The Green Lantern universe is expanding again, and Jeremy Adams is spearheading it all as part of his takeover of the cosmic side of the universe. This is all spinning out of the destruction of the central battery, the United Planets’ takeover of the Corps, and the efforts to rebuild the Corps – but the GLC didn’t get the worst of it. That went to the Red Lantern Corps, who are unable to survive without their power charge and saw most of their members die early into the destruction. The remaining members created battlesuits to keep their hearts pumping, and are now desperate to find something that can fix them – which is why they’re currently seeking out a massive supply of Nth Metal. This has brought them into conflict with Shayera of Thanagar, one of the refugees of the destroyed planet – and a former confidant of John Stewart, who is now trying to keep the two sides from going to war.

This is a pretty good portrayal of the Red Lanterns, showing how their obsession with revenge blinds them to everything else without making them one-dimensionally evil. Plus, Dex-Starr looks adorable in his little battlesuit at the command of a war machine. There’s a great twist as to how they’ve stayed alive this long, as well as a big shocker about what’s hiding at the ruins of Thanagar. This is why I love DC Comics – there is no concept that is too big and too crazy for this kind of story. There are also a lot of great beats in this issue, including Kilowog and Razer’s battle with Sorrow that brings up Razer’s painful past – and who he lost. It’s interesting that this is really being treated as a sequel to the one-season Green Lantern animated series. Overall, this series might be a little busy at times, but that kind of ambition in comics is something I love to see, and the mythology here is just as good as the main title.
