Release Roundup: ‘Disney Lorcana TCG: Shimmering Skies’

Gaming Reviews Tabletop Games

It’s been just under a year since I reviewed the initial release of the GeekDad-approved Disney Lorcana Trading Card Game. Since then, publisher Ravensburger has been busy with regular releases every few month, adding new starter decks, booster packs, and more. Each release also brings new Disney characters to the game, and the latest expansion, Shimmering Skies, is no exception. This release features Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph with the introduction of Disney characters like Vanellope Von Schweetz and Fix-it Felix, Jr.

What Is Disney Lorcana?

Disney Lorcana is a trading card game for 2-6 players, ages 8 and up, and takes about 20-30 minutes to play. While there are rules for multiplayer games, Disney Lorcana will likely most often be played with just 2 players, similar to other trading card games. As with most TCGs (trading card games), each player will need a deck of at least 60 cards to play. A pre-made starter deck for a single player retails for $16.99, while booster packs containing 12 random cards are $5.99. Disney Lorcana is sold directly from Ravensburger, from the Ravensburger store on Amazon, and at many local game stores and big box retailers.

The box itself is sturdy, and illustrated with artwork from the Shimmering Skies release. It contains two removal plastic card holders, and can hold approximately 720 cards.

The Shimmering Skies Illumineer’s Trove retails for $49.99, and is available on Amazon or from your local games store.

I’m using my Illumineer’s Trove to store my pre-made decks. For individual card storage, there are Portfolios.

Portfolios

The best way to safely organize your card collection is via the Portfolios. They contain multiple double-sided 9-card pages, and an elastic strap to keep them closed securely.

The Portfolios are available for the first time as part of the Shimmering Skies release. The Character Card Portfolio retails for $19.99 and can be found on Amazon or at your local games store, while the Card Back design is $24.99 at Amazon.

Shimmering Skies Card-Back Card Sleeve Pack

The Shimmering Skies Card-Back Card Sleeve Pack includes 65 standard-sized, matte finish card sleeves. The pack retails for $9.99, and can be found on Amazon or at your local games store.

The sleeves feel durable, and have a good finish to them that will make a sleeved deck easy to shuffle and handle.

Decks in Disney Lorcana may be composed of no more than two colors. As with all of the Disney Lorcana releases, these preconstructed decks are each made up of two different colors of cards. Each box contains 1 starter deck of 60 cards (including 2 foil cards), 11 tokens, 1 Rules sheet, and 1 booster pack of 12 randomized cards.

Here’s a look at the two foil cards that came with the Amethyst & Ruby starter deck:

The Starter Decks retail for $16.99 and are available at the Ravensburger store on Amazon or at your local games store.

Booster Packs

While Ravensburger didn’t send any individual booster packs, each of the Starter Decks included a single booster pack, and the Illumineer’s Trove held 8. Each booster pack contains 12 randomized cards. Single booster packs retail for $5.99, and can be purchased on Amazon or at your local games store.

Out of all the packs I have opened, between Shimmering Skies and the very first release, The First Chapter, I have so far been unable to get an “Enchanted” card, which is the highest rarity. Out of these 120 cards from the Shimmering Skies booster packs, I received one Legendary rarity, 6 Super Rare, and 18 Rare, with the other 95 cards being a mix of Uncommon and Common cards.

Disney Lorcana TCG: Shimmering Skies

There’s a lot to love in the Disney Lorcana TCG: Shimmering Skies release. The original Disney artwork continues to impress, and fans of Wreck-It Ralph and Enchanted will especially be happy with the many new cards from those films. The new Portfolios are a great way to keep your collection organized while the cards are kept in pristine condition.

If you’re already playing Disney Lorcana, then you’ll be happy with all the new goodies that came out. And if you’re not, Shimmering Skies a great jumping off point for the game, especially with the value in those starter decks.
