Ray: While House of Brainiac ended this week, there’s still one last plot thread to tie up—the Czarnian delinquents loose in Metropolis, causing all the chaos they can. They’ve taken Crush’s friends the Holliday Girls hostage, unleashed Czarnian nano-tech on Metropolis, and worst of all—made the Czarnian dog tagging along with Crush sad. This has made Crush (and Dawg, the most important character in the book) team up with Power Girl for convenience, as the two try to develop a device that would be able to short out the Czarnian tech. Along the way, despite both the intentions of these prickly young women, they start to bond with Crush starting to admit that she’s been pushing people away out of fear. This is an interesting development for a character who started out as a weird random addition but has been slowly getting a lot of character development—including in her own title by Mariko Tamaki.

It’s interesting to see this side of an event, from the perspective of the heroes on the ground. While Brainiac might not appear in this story, his influence has thrown Metropolis into chaos. The main threat is resolved with an explosive and often funny battle, as the frat-boy Czarnians find out the hard way not to mess with two pissed-off women, but there’s a surprisingly strong emotional core here. Crush has gotten the development that past additions to the DCU like Bunker, Roundhouse, and Jinny Hex were really never given outside a few select appearances, and it’s resulted in her being a character who feels very real despite being an alien warrior. I really want to see more of her ridiculous adventures with her girl gang and her oversized Czarnian bulldog, but that might have to wait a while. As it is, this arc has probably been the best so far in this new title.
