We have taken lots of Bluetooth portable speakers to lots of picnics and barbeques over the years.

This summer, the Altec Lansing SoundBucket XL Waterproof Bluetooth Portable Speaker may have proven itself to the be one we have been waiting for. This is not a small, personal-size speaker–the SoundBucket XL is big and powerful enough to get the party started all on its own. The speaker is so big that it has a handle to make it easy to carry and truly embrace the “bucket” appearance.

Featuring 60 watt RMS speakers on all sides and a down-firing subwoofer, the SoundBucket XL can seriously blast out whatever audio is connected through the long-range Bluetooth connection, a connection that is effective at distances up to 100 feet (that means you can leave your phone in your pocket and still stream music).

The top panel of the speaker has an integrated Qi wireless charging pad, so there are no wires required to keep the music playing. But if you like your wires, there is a USB port for charging devices as well. Surrounding the charging pad is a ring of glowing LED lights that strobe in five different modes in sync with the music. The battery inside the SoundBucket XL can power all these features and keep the music pumping for up to 20 hours on a single full charge.

Remember when I said that the SoundBucket XL could get the party started all on its own?

Here’s the thing: it doesn’t need to, with “House Party Pairing” that can connect up to 50 House Party enabled speakers simultaneously, so the music can be everywhere the party is.

Users will want to take a speaker this powerful, with this many features, to every event they can, but visiting the beach or the slopes or the campground might be a problem for a typically delicate portable speaker. The SoundBucket XL is not one of those delicate speakers, it has a full IP67 rating – making it waterproof, snowproof and dirtproof (and ready to party — whoo-hoo).
