The evolution of the Cinemood projector has taken all the great features from the original (covered in GeekMom’s 10 Ways to Bring Your Family Together With a CINEMOOD Storyteller back in April 2017) and expanded on them. The Cinemood is still a super-compact, standalone projector, measuring only 3 inches on a side that can cast an image up to 150” on any flat surface. It still has clear sound from a built-in speaker and a noise-free cooling system.

The upgrades have given the Cinemood extended battery life, now up to 5 hours. Each device is still preloaded with kid-friendly content, now featuring 65 hours of stories and videos from Disney and more than 120 hours of additional cartoons, ebooks, shadow puppets, lullabies, and bedtime stories. The new projectors can stream from Netflix, Amazon Prime, or YouTube through a WiFi connection. Alternatively, Netflix, Amazon Prime, or your own personal videos can be loaded directly to the 16 GB of internal storage on the new Cinemood—allowing viewing without any internet connection.
An update to the software on the Cinemood has recently made a few improvements, including screen mirroring from iOS devices—not only allowing videos saved on iPhones and iPads to be shown on the big screen, but also letting users share their photos, apps, webpages, and documents with whole groups at once.
I was sent a sample unit of the updated Cinemood for the purposes of this review. All of the features were exactly as expected, and incredibly easy to begin using. A particular treat came when I needed to leave my office and brought the projector to my daughter’s dance lesson and started showing videos to the siblings who were not-so-patiently waiting. As you might imagine, the small crowd of bored children was immediately drawn to the brilliant storytelling of Shaman’s Quest and a very unusual peace washed over the waiting room at the dance studio.
Finally, as promised, a special offer just for GeekDad readers: add a free Smart Cover to a purchase of the Cinemood2 on cinemood.com. Just add code geekdad and you will be prompted to choose from the collection of smart covers. Choose wisely, though, as each cover gives users access to themed content that will match that cover. And if you act really, really fast there is a $100 off sale that ends March 8th.
