Just out today, the brand new Star Trek 50th Anniversary TV and Movie Collection will be on your wish list for the holidays this year, if you can wait that long. Over the years, different Star Trek collections have been released, but we were all left with an odd hodge podge of VHS, DVD, single copies of Blu-ray movies, and related paraphernalia. No more. Now you can pass those remnants along to your kids (or eBay) and get everything you want relating to Star Trek (The Original Series) in one updated collection.
The set does come with a hefty price tag, but you get six movies, the entire original television series, the animated series, documentaries, and more. Any fan of the TOS cast will want this, and it’s a fair deal if you look at all of the parts.
What do you get in the collection?
- 30 Blu-ray discs with new disc art
- Every movie and television show that featured the original Enterprise crew
- Newly released Director’s Cut of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
- Newly remastered Star Trek Animated Series
- New, 2-hour multi-part documentary about Star Trek‘s evolution: Star Trek: The Journey to the Silver Screen
- 50th anniversary Starfleet pin
- New mini-posters for the first six movies
- Over 20 hours of previously released bonus content
I sometimes scoff at the extra collectables thrown in with the media you’re buying. But in this case, the “extras” are very well done. The posters each measure about 10.75 in x 7.5 in and are printed on quality cardstock weight paper, and the pin is very heavy, attaching with a strong, flat, magnet backing.
It’s obvious that they took care to make this set something special, with all new art that really honors the content of the material, and they included special touches such as covering the backs of the Blu-ray sleeves with additional art that you might not notice at first. There is plenty to discover just in the packaging, but, of course, the real treat happens once you put the discs in your Blu-ray player.
Space… The final frontier…
They’ve attempted, and I think succeeded, to create the most comprehensive Star Trek collection ever. The Star Trek 50th Anniversary TV and Movie Collection is available at the perfect time to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the debut of Star Trek, on September 8, 1966, in addition to being available for the holiday gift giving season, and it’s always extra fun to see how everyone’s sideburns and haircuts evolve over the decades. I just hope they release something similar for Star Trek: The Next Generation for the 30th anniversary next year!
Now, excuse me while my Star Trek-loving daughter and I go rewatch Star Trek IV for the 100th time.
Note: I received a set for review purposes, but all opinions are my own.
That’s a really nice set.
