Innovation has always appeared a young persons game, but never more so than in technology. Following a generation of Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Mark Zuckerberg, some of the greatest revolutions in tech can come from entrepreneurs barely in their 20s. ZerotoStartup is a program launching in Toronto to help teens develop skills beyond technological know-how and foster the next generation of entrepreneurship.
The program will run out of STEAMLabs which fosters education in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, & Math. Earlier this year, STEAMLabs ran a successful Kickstarter (which we covered here on GeekDad) to fund the purchase of 3D printers, a laser cutting machine, and other equipment. When they open to the public this Autumn they will be running a variety of programs for both youth and adults.
ZerotoStartup is also developed in partnership with Celestica, Ryerson University and Talent Dynamics For Young People. The program is run for 13-weeks on Saturdays starting in September. In the first four weeks, kids 12-17 will learn about robotics, web design, and 3D printing. Following that, they will present a project idea based on this year’s theme of “Sustainable Toronto”. ZerotoStartup intends to be unique in providing all the tools teens will need to become entrepreneurs, even if they don’t have any prior business acumen. As long as they have an interest in business, technology or even the arts, teens will be able to get something out of the program.
