Following up May’s release of Transformers: Armada, the team at Shout Factory has just made available the second chapter in the Unicron Trilogy, Transformers: Energon – The Complete Series. Opening in a rare time of peace between Autobots and Decepticons, Energon was also known for another odd combination of disparate elements; while traditional cel animation was often for the series’ backgrounds and human characters, the Transformers themselves were presented via cel-shaded CGI, an interesting artistic gambit that, sadly, failed as often as it succeeded.
Energon itself was a mixed bag overall. For every sinister Alpha Quintesson plot or awesome Megatron/Galvatron resurrection there was another poorly conceived bit of Autobot Powerlinking or go-nowhere plot point. Still, when Energon was good it was really good, and characters feuds – be it Ironhide vs. Scorponok, Wing Saber vs. Shockblast or even Optimus vs. Rodimus – helped add some uniquely human elements to Transformers’ tragic lack of visible emotion.
This seven-disc set gives fans — and this one really is more for Transformers completionists — a warts-and-all journey through Energon to be enjoyed at one’s own pace. Binge-watching does help get over the sizable mid-series hump, but it also makes the filler that much more noticeable. Still, at Amazon’s price of $34.99, you can enjoy all of Energon‘s (almost) comical use of recurring footage and the staggeringly deep dysfunction of human allies the Jones family without breaking the bank.
But perhaps you’d rather score a copy of this boxed set for the very low price of free?! Once again Shout Factory has kindly hooked GeekDad up with a trio of sets to give away to our readers.
