As we’ve mentioned before, Gamebook Adventures from Tin Man Games are absolutely fantastic. These books are a mashup between Choose Your Own Adventure books and RPG games and have all dealt primarily with fantasy settings … until now. Beginning today, you can pick up Judge Dredd: Countdown Sector 106 for iOS devices.
In this GameBook, Tin Man’s first with a licensed property, players take on the role of Judge Dredd and patrol Mega-City One in search of citizens in need of justice. Like all Gamebook Adventures, the story is action-packed and moves quickly. The artwork is top-notch and like others, there is background music and, in this case, even the voice of Judge Dredd. This is the first Gamebook, for me, where the soundtrack really adds a lot of depth to the setting. It’s quite impressive. All of the collectibles and achievements are there, along with some social media integration, making for a very rich experience.
Readers are the judge, jury, and decision-maker on this roller coaster ride through Sector 106. The choices you make will make the difference between Dredd’s life and death. Will you take on the perps one at a time or all at once? Should you pursue a perp in a dark alley or wait for backup? Will you roll high enough to give yourself an edge in the shootout or must you nudge your iPad to try to effect your roll? There’s only one way to find out – mount your Lawmaster and start dealing some justice.
With a new Judge Dredd movie coming out in little more than a month, this Gamebook really fired me up and got me in the mood. (I even told my kids “I am the law” at bedtime.) And, because each time you read the book it has the potential for a different storyline and ending, Judge Dredd: Countdown Sector 106 is a steal at $4.99 in the iTunes store. (This story will be available for Android devices later this year.) Go check it out now, it is within your authority!
As an aside to parents, this book is a little more mature than other Gamebook Adventures. While there isn’t anything explicit, there is a subplot of a sexbots. Like any media, it’s best to preview if you’re not sure your kids are ready for it.
