“The Commander Thinks Aloud” — 9 Years After the Columbia Disaster

Geek Culture

It was nine years ago today that the Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated on re-entry, killing all seven astronauts on board. This Day in Tech has a good piece on the subject, but in memory of anniversary I thought it would be appropriate to share a wonderful, moving song called “The Commander Thinks Aloud,” from The Long Winters, written about the disaster.

There are two videos below. The first is a music video someone did to The Long Winters’ recording of the song. The second, after the jump, is from w00tstock 3.0 this past summer in San Diego, when John Roderick (lead singer and guitarist for The Long Winters) performed the song with assistance from the other musicians present.
