Happy Birthday, Frank Miller!

Happy Birthday to the man who wrote my favorite Batman story of all time: Batman: Year One.

It's really a Jim Gordon story

Not only did this tale show how and why Batman choose to wear a costume and not only was it a big influence on the look and feel of Batman Begins, but it also brought Jim Gordon, long seen as a bumbling cop, to the foreground of the mythos as Batman’s conscience and he’s never left that position.

Miller also wrote the acclaimed Daredevil: Born Again, The Dark Knight Returns, the Sin City stories and 300. (300 seemed to eventually inspire Spartacus on the Starz network so I think I need to thank Miller for that as well.)

And, of course, the recent series, All-Star Batman & Robin, which contains the immortal quote: “Are you dense? Are you retarded or something? I’m the goddam Batman.”

Opinions remained mixed in fandom whether Miller was trying to be over-the-top with that series or not.
