Ray – 9/10

Ray: Aquaman is back from the supernatural underworld of the ocean, with his new allies and his now-adult daughter in tow – but not all is as it seems. Andy is behaving oddly, being surprisingly ruthless and having a hidden agenda, and the end of the last issue showed she’s not Andy at all – Mera, Garth, Jackson, and a toddler Andy are still left behind in the other realm, desperately trying to find a way back. This is a huge bomb ready to drop into Arthur’s life – but it’s going to have to wait. That’s because Aquaman and his allies are dropping in right in the middle of an event, and Darkseid’s war on Earth is beginning. The events of DC KO are looming in the background, and as this issue begins, an army of Parademons descends on a cruise ship to make an all-you-can-eat buffet out of the guests. Needless to say, it’s all hands on deck to protect the lives of the innocents.

Aquaman narrates much of the issue, but a surprising amount of the story’s voice is given to Zan, the male member of the Wonder Twins, as he searches for his missing sister and tries to find his place on Earth again. The story reveals that Darkseid has been hard at work under the sea, with some obscure Apokaliptan villains making a return and nearly turning the ocean itself against Earth. Aquaman’s new role as the avatar of the Blue is a fascinating way to upgrade the character, and so far this arc has continued the momentum of the first. But Arthur is showing some darker instincts here, no doubt driven by the apparent loss of his wife and his “Daughter” encouraging him to embrace his more ruthless side. It’ll be very interesting to see how this plays out as Arthur heads into DC KO and faces off against his opponent. This definitely isn’t like any Aquaman run we’ve seen before.
