Ray: For close to a year now, Superman has been missing in action – having heroically taken on the mantle of King Omega and entered the timestream to repair the damage caused by Darkseid, only to disappear without a trace. Heroes from the Super-family filled the gap, but the DCU’s iconic hero was gone – until now. He returned from the timestream last week, rescued by his younger self, but we had no indication of where he had been. In this oversized annual, architect Joshua Williamson takes us back to the beginning as Superman finds himself catapulted through time and space – guided by Hourman, the Matthew Tyler version, whose robotic body allowed him to see the future of the DCU the long way around. Superman tries his best to repair the damage caused by Darkseid, visiting hundreds of worlds, but as the eons pass, he’s haunted by the world he left behind – and visions of Lois, his anchor to the present day.
His journeys eventually lead him to the home of the Legion, the foot soldiers of Darkseid who were brainwashed into following the villain during DC KO. Now, they’ve carved out a simple life for themselves in the years that followed, but a mysterious villain named the Infinity Man is hunting them, trying to wipe them out of existence along with all other versions of the Legion. Superman’s sacrifice here seems to open the door for a new beginning for the Legion – one that’s going to make fans of the many, many versions of the characters happy. But before we’re able to begin that new chapter, we’ve got a surprise appearance by a trio of villains who will be the main threat for the new Legion right out of the gate. One is an iconic Superman villain, one works perfectly for the time period this is exploring, and the third is so out of left field that I wouldn’t believe it if you told me. This issue is a great indication that Williamson loves the complex history of the Legion – a must-have quality for getting it right.
