Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Witcher: The Last Wish by Writer: Andrzej Sapkowski, Marcin Zwierzchowski, Artist: Guillermo Fajardo, Colorist: Neeraj Menon, Letterer: Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, Cover artist: Kai Carpenter

The moment I finished the Witcher Saga, with the last book, The Lady of the Lake, I started all over again. I was perplexed. How come something that started with just a collection of short stories, where different fairy-tale tropes were mocked, ended up in such a fantastic and complex place?

The Last Wish was first published in Poland in 1993, and it took almost 14 years to be translated into English in 2007. It followed Geralt of Rivia as he faced different monsters in an alternate reality where magic, elves, dwarves, and other fairy folk lived in a medieval setting. Here, the Witcher must earn a living by facing monsters and different evil deeds.

The story gained popularity as a video game, and then was adapted to the big screen starring Henry Cavill in 2022. By then, the short stories had evolved, becoming five consecutive novels that have a fantastic ending and could have been adapted faithfully (not unlike Game of Thrones; sometimes things go amiss when cinematic adaptations are made).

Properly, Ciri, Geralt and Yennefer will only cross paths in the next short story collection, Sword of Destiny, and then the five short novels would take place, each increasingly more complex than the last.

However, you cannot guess what everything will lead to when Dandelion first opens an old carafe fished from the bottom of a lake and breaks a magic seal.

The unleashing of a dangerous Djinn, the curse it bestows on his singer friend, and the completely interested help Yennefer of Vengerberg play like a comedy of errors.

The important thing is to decide whether you can catch such a powerful being and force him to bend to your will, like Yennefer wants. Wishes were made, but whose are being granted?

This graphic novel is the sixth in a series of adaptations from Sapkowski’s The Last Wish. The complete volume will be released in December.
