Ray: One of the most interesting things Jeremy Adams has done over the course of his run is dial back the cosmic action just a bit – the slightest bit – and give a little more time to Hal Jordan’s original status quo, particular his relationship with Carol Ferris. Now, after a year of trying to rebuild Oa, Hal and Carol finally have time for a memorable Valentine’s Day getaway in Paris – one Hal is hoping will be the perfect time to pop the question. I’m really enjoying how DC has been less afraid in recent years to let its heroes actually be in lasting relationships, even marriages, compared to the competition. But things aren’t going to go as smoothly here – first, Hal has to come clean about the secrets he’s been keeping from the Book of Oa. And then, just as he’s about to pop the question, Paris comes under attack from Cupid, the deranged love-struck stalker of Green Arrow.

Night off. Via DC Comics.

My favorite part of this issue is how human everyone feels, particular when the proposal accidentally gets spoiled – and Carol pretty much loses her mind. It feels real and raw in a way you don’t get to see all that often in superhero comics. Cupid is pretty much just an obstacle to these two, and actually seems genuinely scared when she realizes she’s angered a cosmic being. But soon, another wrinkle is thrown into the fray when Carol’s true purpose to the Star Sapphire entity is revealed just as Hal has to head off into deep space. These two are the heart of the issue, but I also really enjoyed the interaction between Hal and Kyle as he asks Kyle to take over as Earth’s primary Green Lantern going forward. These two have such a complex history and enmity between the fans that I always like seeing them teaming up. It’s clear that Adams loves just about every corner of the GL verse, and that’s a big selling point of this book.
