Ray: Batman’s elimination in the first round of the King Omega tournament may have been a shock, but it allowed him to head right into this spin-off event where he’s sent catapulting through time and space, encountering twisted versions of his sons in worlds where they became Batman. First came a version of Dick Grayson who led an army of Robins – after Bruce reportedly killed all his brothers. Then last issue, he found himself locked up at the mercy of Jason Todd, who had become a ruthless warden – and Bruce turned out to be a version of Clayface who thought he was Batman. It was all very surreal, and that made it clear enough to Bruce that this was all fake. Soon, he’s confronting the entity behind it all, who created this all to punish Batman for breaking the rules of the tournament. And now he’s ready to send Bruce into his next test – the world that represents Tim Drake’s story.

Tim’s the Robin who never wanted to be Batman, so it’s interesting to see what his world looks like. This is essentially a high-tech version of Clue, as Tim – who is a cybernetic Batman who has become obsessed with solving mysteries and distanced himself from his friends – tries to unravel Batman’s murder but never can quite pull it off. Bruce, who doesn’t have a physical form in this version of the test, actually winds up hacking his way through the system and trying to reach out to his son. It’s really interesting how each of these worlds requires a different skill set, and that seems to make the entity even angrier as he prepares one final test for Batman – one that shows him something very different, something that his life could be if he would only lay down his burdens. It’s never been clear if this entity is in fact evil or neutral, but it is clear that there are incredibly high stakes for this final issue as Batman makes one last gambit.
