Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #44 – Mark Waid/Mark Russell, Writers; Lucas Meyer, Artist; Rain Beredo, Colorist
Ray – 9.5/10
Ray: The best issue of this series was the hilarious Supergirl/Robin date issue, which not only ended with a disaster, but the two teen heroes developing a deep dislike for each other – so deep that Superman and Batman know to not team them on any missions more than briefly. So naturally, it was only a matter of time before we got a sequel – and satirist Mark Russell is along for the ride. In this issue, Robin is being sent on an undercover mission into a factory working on top-secret and dangerous technology. He needs backup in case he gets captured – so the heroes reluctantly ask Supergirl to tail him and be ready to step in if needed, while ensuring her she won’t actually have to talk with him. So this leaves a very bored and annoyed Kara following from afar, listening to Dick’s tiresome pocasts and trying not to fall asleep mid-air – that is, until things take a downhill turn in the mission fast.

Robin is quickly unmasked as a mole, the goons are called out, Supergirl flies in to save the day – and is promptly knocked out by the synthetic Kryptonite they’ve been making at the facility. So the two wind up chained together, the worst nightmare for both of them, and then have to deal with a podcast-obsessed guard in order to get free. Along the way, their forced teamwork leads to the two of them developing some grudging respect for each other, then some less-grudging respect – and then sharing a surprising moment that gets interrupted in the most awkward way possible. This is the kind of story that really shouldn’t work, especially given that Dick and Kara never really had much of a relationship in any continuity for good or bad before, but the way it plays out is so funny that it’s quickly become one of the biggest highlights of this series. More of these two in this book, please.
