Usagi Yojimbo: Ten Thousand Plums # 2: Writer, Artist, Cover Artist: Stan Sakai Colorist: Hi-Fi Colour Design
Once upon a time, a magical creature was desperate to save her very ill daughter. As she was near the village of The Valley of the Ten Thousand Plums, she begged the peasants for some Umeboshi.
I have never tasted these, but Gen will describe their flavor most compellingly. Known for their healing capabilities, to refuse some to a sick child must be considered a sin. One that will spark outrage on the injured Kitsune, the magical fox adored by Japanese lore.
Usagi′s gang has been asked to help preserve the trees, as someone has been setting fire to them. The previous group of samurai in charge of this has all been murdered.
One of the things I love the most about Usagi′s comics is the post-scriptums: The information about Japanese culture, in this case, about Kitsune society. Who knew there were magical foxes that are poor, and some that are rich and powerful?
