Spring is coming and with it, plum flowers, The Valley of the Ten Thousand Plums not far away, but someone is damaging the prized Shogun’s trees.
The samurai in charge suspect Usagi’s gang, but they are not the ones setting fire to the valley.
The plums are prized and highly regarded because they are used to make Umeboshi (literally ‘dried ume’). The brined ume fruits are a key part of Japanese cuisine and are known for their health benefits. They are high in citric acid, polyphenols, and plant probiotics and are thought to cure all kinds of ailments, even diabetes. Their flavor comes associated with the fifth flavor, known as umami, a distinct flavor associated with sushi and other Japanese delicacies.
Umeboshi will be a key part of the plot, and soon we will know why.
