Ray: The Question’s tenure as the security team of the Watchtower has not been off to a good start, with one of the Challengers of the Unknown nearly being assassination, several villains getting loose including Superman dupe Eradicator, and all the evidence pointing to Renee’s ex-lover Batwoman. She ultimately cleared her name – but not before Kate felt terribly betrayed, ending any chance of a reunion between them for now. But the mission goes on, as it’s clear something very strange is happening in the sky. Something is releasing tech-based villains like Eradicator and Conduit, and either faking evidence of heroes committing the act – or making them do it through other means. Before Kate and Renee can work things out, the mystery villain strikes again – this time controlling Nightshade as the shadow-based anti-hero targets both the Blue Beetles working on the site’s safeguards.
I’ll be honest, I figured out who the main villain was going to be fairly early in the issue. Once you piece together the hints we were given and the type of villains he’s releasing, there was only one real suspect that made sense. But that’s fine, because that’s a villain who has been involved in some of the biggest plots in DC history and I’m always happy to see them get a spotlight. The mystery that took up the first three issues was compelling, but it moved so fast and chaotic that it seemed like everyone was battling to keep up. And now, as we hit the halfway point, it seems like it’s going to transition to a full-on action comic. It’s very different from the kind of book Renee Montoya is usually involved in, but that works nicely. She’s spent so long mired in the politics of Gotham that it’s easy to forget that she’s ready to play with the big boys on the biggest stage possible.
