Ray: It’s the end of the first arc of this dark universe, before a one-shot next month. Things have gone from bad to worse with the death of John Constantine at the hands of the vampires, and the fate of Scott and Barda’s daughter is quickly determined in a way that seems too abrupt for a character who was hyped as the future of the world – so I’m guessing there’s more to be told here. But the main point of this issue is that whatever tentative peace had been worked out is no more, and the march to war has begun. Recovered from her burns, Queen Gordon is thirsting to finish off the human resistance, and Oliver Queen has quickly lost all faith in a detente with the vampires. It all builds to an explosive finish – and an unexpected arrival that will completely unbalance the playing field.

Blood feud. Via DC Comics.

The backup by Esposito and Qualano focuses on Animal Man, and finds him in a dark position – trying to feed his vampiric family. Having lost all three of them to the plague, he’s currently keeping them locked up and trying to feed them with animals, but it’s not going well – and he quickly finds himself going from the keeper to the prey in chapter one. Good to see Esposito getting more gigs at DC after his recent indie hit. It’s also interesting to see Animal Man’s son make an appearance here – the character died over ten years ago in the main continuity, but most writers outside of there seem to ignore that.
