Ray: This issue was hyped up as the birth of Trinity, and I think most people expected they knew what would happen here. After all, the dangling plot thread of the pregnant rogue Amazon was right there, and an adoption would fit some of the themes of the DCU. But Tom King never was one to take a straightforward approach, and he’s managed to hide one of the biggest secrets to drop in the DCU in a long time.

Steve Trevor has been a character who has been looming large in Wonder Woman’s stories for a long time, but many readers – and writers – haven’t exactly know what to make of him. But he’s such a huge figure that it’s hard to imagine the book without him – and that’s exactly what Tom King gives us, as he’s shockingly assassinated by the Sovereign to start this issue, as a way to escalate the war and pull Diana out of hiding.

Washed away. Via DC Comics.

What ensues is a stunning issue about grief, as the villains wait for the other shoe to drop and Diana takes her own path, processing the loss and fighting against all the forces of nature and death itself. Steve was a character who often could feel like a loose end, but in this issue he feels so very present, and has some of the best scenes he’s ever had. There are so many great moments here, including call-backs to Greek mythology, and it builds to a brilliant goodbye scene followed by a moment that I never really expected, but makes 100% sense in the big scheme of things. Tom King took a long time before returning to in-continuity DC Comics, but he seems to be making up for lost time – because this not only fits seamlessly into continuity, but seems destined to change Diana’s character for the long haul. Kudos to both this brilliant creative team and DC for just letting them absolutely go for it.
