Ray – 8/10
Ray: This is probably the All In title that’s seeing the least dramatic status quo changes coming into the new era, but it still has some strong moments. It picks up directly from last issue, which saw Omen brutally beaten and nearly killed by the mysterious new heroine Ejecta – who seems to have a deep hatred for telephaths. While Power Girl returns from her cosmic date and investigates this new character, Omen has become a recluse due to her trauma. We’re also seeing the expansion of “Team Peej” this issue, as Paige makes the risky decision to bring in Mariposa from the Daily Planet into her inner circle and tell her about her secret identity. Mariposa is a character who has been floating around the Super-books for a few months, and she seems nice – maybe a bit too nice. I’ve learned from other titles not to trust anyone who is this agreeable and understanding.
But while the addition of Mariposa and Natasha Irons does give Paige some new weapons as she tracks down this mystery vigilante, it seems like Ejecta is always one step ahead of the crew. There’s speculation that she might not be superpowered at all, but might be powered by AI and using it as a feint. But when the heroes confront her, after convincing Omen to head out of her apartment for the first time in a month, it becomes clear that her powers are far more dangerous than anyone thought. This is an intriguing arc, with a villain with some big secrets that start to be revealed at the end of the arc. But despite that, there’s an almost casual feel to this series at times, with Power Girl’s personal and professional troubles getting as much attention as its superhero conflicts. This is an pretty solid run, but it has a groove it wants to fit in and it doesn’t seem to be changing anything up for All In.
