Ray: As we lead up to Absolute Power, this series by Nicole Maines has actually been one of the biggest tie-ins—with Amanda Waller’s complex plan to take control of the DCU playing out as she builds a new Task Force X complete with villains, anti-heroes, and even heroes like Dreamer. Fresh off her brilliant graphic novel “Dreamer: Bad Dream,” Maines puts Dreamer in a much harsher situation and sends her up against the DCU’s power brokers. When we last left off, Dreamer had discovered Waller had dark plans for a secret alien colony hiding in the United States. She went on the run, and the rest of the team was sent out after her—despite several of them sympathizing with her much more than Waller, including Harley. This sets the stakes high from the start, with Bizarro having a near-breakdown in the opening pages as the Suicide Squad descends on the colony.

Dreamer is a fascinating character as brought to life by Maines, because she’s inherently a decent person—but she’s one who has also experienced a lot of pain, and seen her kindness exploited and thrown back in her face. We rarely see her rage truly unleashed—until now, when she faces off against an army of bigots taking on the colony, and then against her former allies. The Task Force X members, while few of them want to go up against Dreamer, have no choice—literally, as they have bombs in their necks. But Dreamer isn’t willing to give an inch, and Maines shows off how scary her powers can be when used in an offensive manner. This series is only four issues, which means it’s all coming to a close next issue. I’m not sure what Maines has planned next for DC, but I would say DC would be very smart to keep her busy and happy—her work for them so far has been excellent.
