Amazons Attack #6 – Josie Campbell, Writer; Vasco Georgiev, Artist; Alex Guimaraes, Colorist
Ray – 9/10
Ray: For five issues, we’ve followed the other Amazons and Mary Marvel as they not only run from the U.S. government, but chase a conspiracy dating back to the founding of the Amazons thousands of years ago and a possible supernatural explanation for the wave of anti-Amazon hate. The apples of Discord are in the wild, and last issue made it seem like Faruka, Queen of the Bana-Mighdall, was behind it—but as soon as she opens her month, it’s clear that she’s not in control of herself. Rather, what is behind all of this is an ancient evil from the first war between the Amazons and man’s world, a traitor whose hate turned her into something monstrous—and now she’s resurrected to put an end to the Amazons once and for all. This feels a little more timely than I expected, given how many people unfortunately can be convinced to turn against their own marginalized group with a good sales pitch.

But then, her true form is revealed, and this comic turns into something that reminds me more of the works of Ray Harryhausen than anything. That’s not a criticism, although it is a big tonal shift—I love when comics get big, wacky, and ridiculous. The final battle has some fantastic visuals, and it also gives us the chance to see the Wonders work together like never before, and allows Hoppy to steal the show one more time. The supernatural threat is resolved this issue, but the issue with the government won’t be so easy to deal with. A face-off with Sarge Steel sets up future conflict in the pages of Wonder Woman, but I’m equally excited for what Campbell will be delivering going forward in Shazam!—she’s taking over the title next week, bringing Mary and Hoppy with her, along with Mary’s new arch-nemesis. Based on this series, we’re in for a good time on that title.
