Birds of Prey #6 – Kelly Thompson, Writer; Leonardo Romero, Artist; Jordie Bellaire, Colorist

Ray: After a one-issue guest stint by Arist Deyn, which brought a surreal edge to the story as the ancient entity Megaera took center stage, Leo Romero is back to bring the arc to a shocking close. The ancient being has made its way inside Sin, possessing the girl and posing an existential threat to the world—but how far is Dinah willing to go, including sacrificing her sister, to stop the threat? It’s an impossible choice, made all the harder by the Amazons closing in on them, Meridian going missing, and Zealot having her own mission. But while that battle is raging, another is as well—inside sin, as the teenager does battle on the psychic plane with Megaera and essentially forces the creature into a detente so they can come to a solution that allows them both to exist before they wind up trapped together for all eternity. It’s a fascinating solution that I haven’t seen before in a comic like this.
But while the immediate catastrophic threat is over—or at least put in a bottle for the time being—there are some major obstacles left. First, the Amazons have to let them leave. Then, they have to make their way home—where a less-than-pleased Barbara Gordon is waiting, and feels betrayed by her omission from the team. She could be speaking for the readers, who felt like a Birds of Prey without Oracle isn’t the Birds at all. There’s a big meta reason for this that becomes clear this issue, thanks to the presence of Meridian, who’s coming from the future with a lot of spoilers, and neatly sets up a whole new team for the coming issues. One arc in, I feel pretty safe in saying this is one of the best books DC is putting out right now. Thompson has put together a compelling team with a unique mission statement, and is pairing with one of the best artists in the industry to bring it to life.
